In the assessment, we will be provided with 0.1 mol/L sodium thiosulfate solution. We do not know this accurately enough for the investigation. We need to standardise it (find its exact) concentration. For this, we need our primary standard solution (potassium iodate) and excess potassium iodide and sulfuric acid (for hydrogen ions). This makes a known amount of iodine, which will react with the thiosulfate ion.
